Folks in the MCDC know I'm new to Monroe County--I think eight years qualifies as "new"--and I'm certainly new to political activism--I'm sure most would consider three years "new" there, too.
So, speaking as a new guy, I did not, until recently understand what super delegates were.
Now I do, and just in the nick of time.
Super Delegates come in many forms: they are our many of our elected officials and select party functionaries; they can vote anyway they like at the Democratic Convention.
This is the first year since I've been able to vote, going back thirty-four years, that super delegates might count, might be able to affect the outcome.
As long-time political observers already know, this gives Sen. Clinton a HUGE advantage, but if she wins our party's nomination because of her connections to the Democratic establishment, then we will all lose, if not the election in November, at least the sense that our voice counts for something.
I personally support Sen. Obama, but, if the Convention is resolved fairly--my definition of "fair," not the winning side's definition of "fair"--then I will be happy and proud to vote for Sen. Clinton.
I've said all along that I would've been happy with either Obama, Clinton, or Edwards. That is still true.
But if the votes of super delegates don't reflect the vote of their constituencies...then I will be terribly disappointed, disillusioned, convinced that this nonsensical red-state-blue-state thing will continue, convinced, in effect, that nothing will change, that nothing HAS changed.
I ask, as a voter, that our local super delegate(s) vote for the candidate that wins their constituency.
Anything less will make it appear that one side stole the nomination, and then, from the perspective of all these new, idealistic voters, we won't be any different from the President who stole the 2000 Election.
I realize there are those who will disagree with my assessment--and I welcome their voices in this forum--but I know the difference between right and wrong, and if the voice of the people is NOT reflected in the determination of our party's candidate, that will be wrong, and only the parsers of the world will think otherwise.
